Most Erie dumpster rentals need no permit at all. The rule of thumb: private property, no permit; public street, probably a permit. Here's the detail.

On your driveway or your land: usually no permit

If the dumpster sits entirely on private property — your driveway, your yard, a job site you control — the city generally doesn't get involved. Two things to check: your HOA (some restrict how long a container can sit, or require it be screened), and your driveway itself — we put boards under the container to protect the surface.

On the street: a right-of-way permit

When a container has to sit on a public street, alley or sidewalk, Erie typically requires a temporary right-of-way (or “obstruction”) permit from the permits office. It usually covers a set number of days and may require reflective markers or cones. What we need from you

Tell us where the container is going when you call. If it's the street, get the permit before delivery day — we can usually deliver next-day once it's approved. If you're outside Erie, rules differ town to town across the Greater Erie area; ask and we'll point you to the right office.

Avoiding the need for a permit

A 10-yard is only about 12 feet long and fits most driveways. If space is tight, a smaller container on the driveway is faster and cheaper than a permit for the street.
